Crash at 40MPH – What I Learned

🏁 “Crash at 40MPH”
As a dad who never did motorsport, it’s always interesting to get Theo’s take on tough moments.
Recently, during a practice at Larkhall Karting Track in Scotland, Theo hit 40MPH and lost control — crashing hard enough to twist his kart and cause minor injuries. It wasn’t his first crash, but it was by far the hardest. So I asked him how it felt? Here’s what he told me:
“At first, I was embarrassed. Then I was gutted. Then I got back in the kart, by the way it was actually 40MPH"
🎓 Lesson Learned
What Theo learned in that moment is what karting is really about. It’s not just going fast — it’s learning how to fall, get up, and keep driving.
As his dad and mechanic, you can’t help but wonder: Was it my fault? Could I have prevented it?
What amazed me was what came next:
✅ He was back in a rental kart at Dundee TeamSport within 24 hours — and landed a podium.
✅ A few days later, he raced the Daniel Ricciardo Series
✅ And within two weeks? He was back in the very same kart that crashed.
Then Theo said something that stayed with me:
“The crash shook me, but it made me realise I’m not racing just to win. I’m racing because I love it. Even when it hurts. Even when it doesn’t go to plan. That’s what racing is.”
🧠 Resilience in Motion
I work in financial services, where we talk about resilience and mental health a lot. But to see it being built — this early, this deeply — is something else.
To any young drivers out there, especially in Scotland — or parents thinking about karting near Glasgow — just know: Moments like this don’t stop you. They shape you.
